US Vice-President JD Vance will travel to Argentina next month to meet President Javier Milei, according to local media reports.

Government sources, quoted by at least three news outlets in Argentina, said the visit is being organised at Washington’s request.

Talks are at an early stage and no definitive itinerary has been set, although Vance is expected to meet Milei at government house during his stay.

“The visit is confirmed. It was at their request. It is a regional visit. There will be a meeting with Milei at the Casa Rosada,” a government source told the TN news channel.

The US vice-presidemt’s visit will form part of a wider regional tour, with “between two and three days of activities” planned in Argentina, the source added.

Vance, 42, and Milei, 55, last met at the White House in October 2025, when the Argentine leader travelled to Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump.

If confirmed, Vance’s trip would be the first visit to Argentina by a sitting US vice-president since April 2017, when Mike Pence met then-president Mauricio Macri at the Quinta de Olivos presidential residence.

The visit would come in the same month as Pope Leo XIV’s planned trip to Argentina from November 8 to 11, with events scheduled in Buenos Aires City, Luján and Córdoba.

Vance is a practising Catholic, though has publicly disagreed with Church leaders on matters of theology and foreign policy.

He criticised Leo’s predecessor, late Argentine pontiff Pope Francis, for his teaching on immigrants and migration.

Back in April, Vance said it was “very, very important” for Pope Leo to “be careful when he talks about matters of theology” after the pontiff criticised the US position on the war in Iran.

The proposed high-level visit underscores the close ties between the Trump administration and Milei’s government.

Since taking office in December 2023, Milei has shifted Argentina’s foreign policy towards Washington and US business interests, aligning his government closely with the United States and making his relationship with Trump a priority.

The two governments have deepened ties across the commercial, financial, energy and security sectors and are negotiating a wide-ranging trade agreement that would remove tariffs on around 100 products.

During his first two years in office, Milei made 17 trips to the United States, although not all included meetings with Trump.

In October 2025, the Trump administration offered Milei’s government an unprecedented US$20-billion currency swap to help calm financial and market turbulence ahead of that month’s elections.

A month after the vote, the two countries announced the outline of a wide-ranging bilateral trade agreement.

Vance has not confirmed that he will run for president in 2028 but is widely regarded to be one of the Republican frontrunners.

Born in Middletown, Ohio, Vance served four years in the US Marines, including a tour in Iraq, before studying at Ohio State University and Yale Law School.

He later worked as a lawyer and venture capitalist, before rising to prominence with his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which detailed his unstable impoverished upbringing.

Vance was elected to the US Senate in 2022 and – despite having previously described himself as a "never Trumper" – joined the Republican presidential ticket in 2024. He became vice-president in January 2025.
