TODAY’S PICK — CENTRO CULTURE
A free, compact art morning in Centro
Start at Museu Nacional de Belas Artes in Centro. During its partial reopening, two exhibitions, “Abolicionistas Brasileiras” and “O Futuro da Memória”, are open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm, with free entry. The second shows about 68 recent acquisitions, including a sculpture by Anish Kapoor.
Walk about 15 minutes to Paço Imperial on Praça XV, open Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 6 pm with free admission. The colonial building itself is part of the draw.
Stop for coffee at Confeitaria Colombo on Rua Gonçalves Dias, an ornate belle-époque room.
Take the Metrô to Cinelândia station; the single fare is R$7.90 (about US$1.51). The area is busy on weekdays.
OUTDOORS — WATERFRONT ARC
A seawall walk before the weather turns
Begin at Mureta da Urca around 9 am for views over Guanabara Bay. The walkway is flat and shaded in parts.
Walk or take a short ride to Praia Vermelha, where the cable car queue to Pão de Açúcar is quieter on weekdays before noon.
Save the Jardim Botânico for Wednesday, which looks hot and mostly dry.

A paid, immersive morning in Praça Mauá
Museu do Amanhã in Praça Mauá is open today from 10 am to 6 pm, with last entry at 5 pm. Entry costs R$40 (about US$7.65), or R$20 (about US$3.83) at half price. The museum closes on Wednesdays.
The main exhibition is immersive. Next door, the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) is free on Tuesdays. Take the VLT from Cinelândia to Praça Mauá.
Afterwards, walk the Boulevard Olímpico to see its large street murals.
TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM
Live music and a quiet bar stool
Beco das Garrafas in Copacabana, a cradle of bossa nova, hosts small jazz and samba sessions. Check the programme first, as not every bar there has a show on a Tuesday.
Note that Rio Scenarium in Lapa opens Wednesday to Saturday only, so it is closed tonight.
For a quieter night, try Bar dos Descasados at the Hotel Santa Teresa, with veranda views over the city.

TRANSPORT
Metrô lines 1, 2 and 4 run normally today, with the single fare at R$7.90 (about US$1.51). Avoid peak crush between 5 pm and 7 pm through Botafogo and Flamengo stations.
The VLT costs a flat R$5.00 (about US$0.96) and is useful for hopping between Praça Mauá, Cinelândia and Santos Dumont.

Lunch: Try Galeto Sat’s in Copacabana for quick grilled galeto. In Centro, many restaurants around Rua do Ouvidor serve a set executive lunch on weekdays.
Dinner: Marius Degustare on Avenida Atlântica, open daily until midnight, serves a seafood rodízio; it is one of the pricier options, so check the current rate. For a lower-key night, Bar Urca serves snacks and cold beer that locals take to the seawall.

Carry a light rain jacket and a charged phone with offline maps. Use registered taxi apps at night rather than hailing street cabs.

The Ibovespa fell 0.26% on Monday to 182,991, and the real weakened 0.86% to 5.2255 per US dollar. In New York, the S&P 500 lost 0.77%, while the US 10-year Treasury yield briefly touched its highest level since June 2007.
At home, the share of federal debt linked to the Selic rose to a record 52.7% in August, from 51.1% in July, Treasury data showed. With the Selic at 13.75% after the 16 September cut, Selic-linked CDBs and Tesouro Selic still pay high nominal returns.
The US jobs report is due on Friday 2 October. In Brazil, the first round of the general election takes place on Sunday 4 October.
