Rivian Automotive is recalling 98,828 vehicles due to a possible obstructed rearview camera image that could reduce the driver’s view and increase the risk of an accident.
A report posted on Sept. 24 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicated that certain 2022-2027 R1S, 2022-2026 R1T, and 2027 R2 models may be affected. The report shows that a notification could obstruct rearview camera images when the vehicle is in reverse.
Rivian has already released an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge. Notification letters to owners of affected vehicles are expected to be mailed starting Nov. 9.
Rivian first found the condition during its internal testing conducted from July through September. As of Sept. 16, the company was not aware of any customer reports, accidents, injuries, or fatalities related to the software glitch. The NHTSA report indicated that the software update has already been installed in more than 95 percent of the impacted vehicles.
Based in Irvine, California, Rivian has been manufacturing electric vehicles since 2009.
Rivian reported the last major recall to the NHTSA in September 2025, which affected 24,214 R1S and R1T vehicles for software defects with the hands-free highway assist that could fail to identify a lead vehicle. The company released an OTA update free of charge.
Earlier this month, Chrysler (FCA US) recalled 239,131 Ram vehicles because rearview camera images were not displaying properly, increasing the risk of an accident. The recall involved certain 2025 and 2026 RAM 1500 models with a radio software error.
This follows a July recall by the American Honda Motor Company for 325,558 vehicles with rear-view cameras that could fail to display images. Affected vehicles included certain 2018–2020 Odyssey models.
A May recall for delayed rearview camera images involved 218,868 Tesla vehicles. That issue was also attributed to a software glitch.
A Carscoops car comparison website reported more than six million vehicle recalls last year for camera-related problems in its August 2026 blog. Carscoops noted that issues involved everything from blank screens to inaccurate displays. Since 2018, it said, there have been more than 180 camera-related recalls.
“But it’s not the camera that’s necessarily the villain here,” the report said. “It’s the computer interpreting the images the camera captures.”
However, Carscoops notes the importance of backup cameras, as they can often reveal children, bicycles, and low obstacles that car mirrors may not pick up.
