The Prime Minister’s Office said Hanley flew in to brief him after leading the federation’s delegation to the UN General Assembly. Drew used the meeting to thank his Cabinet for “steady and dedicated leadership during this period”.

What the two men discussed
According to the statement, Hanley gave a full update on government business and on the federation’s work at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. The two also discussed current government priorities.
Drew also thanked Cabinet minister Konris Maynard, who served as acting prime minister while Hanley was in New York. The statement was carried by SKNVibes on 29 September and by Nevis Pages and WIC News on 30 September.
“My commitment to you, and to the vision we share for our Federation, remains unwavering,” Drew said. He added that he looks forward to returning to his full duties “in due course”.
A month of acting arrangements
Drew fell ill at home in late August, and Hanley addressed the nation on his hospitalisation on 31 August, WINN FM reported. According to Caribbean Life, he was first stabilised in nearby Martinique and then moved to a hospital in Florida.
Hanley became acting prime minister and took over the finance and health ministries, Virgin Islands News Online reported on 2 September. Justice Minister Garth Wilkin took national security, citizenship and immigration.
In a video in mid-September, the St Kitts PM confirmed the stroke and said he had left hospital. He said a dissected artery at the back of his brain caused it, and that therapy was progressing well.
Why “confidence” is the message
Local reports framed the Miami meeting as a show of unity inside the Labour government. The facts point to continuity rather than a coalition under strain.
Labour, led by Drew, won six of the 11 elected seats in August 2022, according to the government information service. That is a majority on its own, with no partner party needed.
The Concerned Citizens’ Movement (CCM) took all three Nevis seats and sits in opposition. Its leader, Mark Brantley, is both federal opposition leader and Premier of Nevis, heading the island’s own administration.
Labour and the CCM are rivals at the ballot box. Yet on 3 September Brantley urged people not to politicise Drew’s illness, WINN FM reported.
“Before Terence Drew was Prime Minister, he was human,” Brantley said. No public dispute between Labour and the CCM over the acting arrangements has been reported.
What it means for the federation
A small state run for weeks by an acting leader faces questions about decisions on budgets and investment. Citizenship-by-investment rules, under EU pressure, are one such file, as we reported earlier this month.
The regional central bank also recently cut its economic outlook for St Kitts and Nevis. Continuity at the top helps keep policy steady while those issues are handled.
What Is Not Yet Known
No date has been announced for the St Kitts PM’s return home. The government has not said when the acting portfolio assignments will end.
Beyond Drew’s own account, no medical update has been published. It is also not known whether any major Cabinet decisions await his return.
