Virginia Judge Released Pedo Teacher Despite Opposition From Soros-Backed Prosecutor

Over the objections of a Soros-funded prosecutor, a Fairfax County judge released a former teacher charged with 20 counts of child pornography on bail without requiring an ankle monitor.

Judge Michael Devine’s decision to release the teacher was first brought to light by local independent journalist Virginians for Safe Communities (VSC) on Wednesday and confirmed by multiple county officials to the Daily Caller. “GROSS,” VSC said upon announcing the judge’s decision, adding that “Fairfax’s justice system and schools are sick.”

Matthew Thorsen, a 38-year-old high school math teacher, was arrested days after authorities were notified of concerns that he had engaged in inappropriate behavior with a minor, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a statement.

Fairfax County Public Schools immediately placed Thorsen on administrative leave after being made aware of the allegations.

At the time of his June 4 arrest, police said Thorsen had been charged with three counts of Indecent Liberties by Custodian and Using a Communication Device to Solicit a Minor and was held without bond.

Now, Fairfax court records show that Thorsen faces seven counts of possessing child pornography in the county’s General District Court, along with 13 additional child pornography charges in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Fairfax’s Adult Detention Center told the Daily Caller on Wednesday that Thorsen had begun the removal process but could not determine when he would be released. Offender tracking site Vine reported that Thorsen was released by court order Wednesday night.

As the case remains open, with preliminary hearings scheduled for the end of September and in November, Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano’s spokesperson told the Caller that details of the case are limited.

However, the spokesperson said prosecutors “strongly opposed bond at the hearing [Wednesday] morning and, when the judge indicated he would be released, we asked for monitoring as a condition. The judge declined to grant that request.”

VSC suggested that releasing Thorsen must be an especially awful idea if even Descano would protest against it.

“Even Fairfax ‘prosecutor’ Steve Descano asked for GPS monitoring - Devine said NO,” VSC said. “Devine was just reappointed to new 8 year term on April 1, 2026 & is notoriously soft on sex offenders”

The Caller has reported several instances of Fairfax County suspects having their charges dropped or minimized, only to later be connected to rape, abduction, and murder charges.

Descano is also being investigated by the Department of Justice for offering preferential treatment to illegal aliens after the year began with several murders and other violent crimes committer by criminal illegal immigrants who were released by Descano’s office without being turned over to immigration enforcement for deportation.

Descano took office in 2020 after receiving more than $600,000 in campaign funds from a PAC sponsored by leftist mega-donor George Soros. Descano has also already survived two recall efforts.
