CV NEWS FEED // Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles recently won a friendly World Series wager against Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York. By the time the Dodgers clinched the title October 30, the wager had raised $20,000 for schools in both dioceses.

As CatholicVote previously reported, the two prelates made a friendly wager October 25 before the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees.

The bishops promised each other regional treats, with Cardinal Dolan promising New York bagels and Archbishop Gomez promising Randy’s Donuts, and set a wager through the website Baseball Unites, where others could place wagers on which team would win and all proceeds would benefit Catholic schools in both dioceses.

Angeles News reports that the wager raised $20,000 for both schools, with 60% of the proceeds benefiting the Catholic Education Foundation of Los Angeles, which provides scholarships for Catholic school students. The other 40% will go to New York’s John Cardinal O’Connor School in New York, a school for children with learning disabilities.

“What a great World Series. Not only because the Dodgers won. Certainly, that was great,” Archbishop Gomez said. “But it was also just fun to watch, both teams played such good baseball every night. So, thank you to all the players, and a special thank you to everyone who supported our Baseball Unites campaign to help Catholic schools. I’m looking forward to some New York bagels. Go Blue!”

Cardinal Dolan also responded to the results.

“Congratulations to the Dodgers on a great season and World Series and to my brother, Archbishop Gomez, and I hope he enjoys his bagels,” he said. “Even more, my thanks to all who participated in our Baseball Unites campaign in support of Catholic education and our great schools. That makes us all winners, especially our kids.”

Both teams featured players from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The Dodgers’ starting pitcher Jack Flaherty went to middle school at the Incarnation School in Glendale, California. The Yankees’ designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California.
