City Of Paris Launches Investigation After Eiffel Tower Replaced Female Workers For Foreign Group’s Visit

The City of Paris has launched an investigation after female staff at the Eiffel Tower were replaced with men during a weekend visit from a Hindu religious group.

Female staffers felt “humiliated” after reportedly being told to leave their posts Saturday when the traditional Hindu religious sect known as Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) made a pitstop at the Eiffel Tower as part of their visit to Paris, French union spokesperson Diane Davoine told BBC. The staff changes prompted a mass strike by tower workers that forced operations to shut down.

During the visit, women who work at the tower were “instructed not to go through or cross certain areas while the delegation was present,” BBC reported.

Ariel Weil, the top executive at the company that runs the historic French landmark, The Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel, was not pleased with the news.

She dubbed the attempted cultural accommodations as “a bit overzealous,” noting that the decision failed to consider whether or not the move was workplace appropriate, the BBC reported.

Weil is also the Mayor of Paris Centre.

Separately, the French business and political leader told a French broadcaster that the situation was “totally shocking and unacceptable,” BBC added.

French government authorities will now begin a probe to ensure that something like this “never happens again,” Weil told the French press.

News of the investigation news came soon after BAPS consecrated its first temple in the Paris suburbs on Sunday.

BAPS took to X to tell followers that the trip to the landmark was “arranged in conjunction with the Eiffel Tower team at the start of normal opening hours to avoid disrupting or inconveniencing others,” per the outlet.

The religious organization expressed condolences “for any pain or inconvenience caused,” emphasizing that they “believe in the universal values of mutual respect and service.”
