New bodycam footage has revealed the chilling moment Laken Riley's accused killer was startled awake and questioned over her tragic death.

Jose Ibarra, an undocumented migrant who arrived in America from Venezuela, was sleeping on a mattress on the floor when police arrived at the unit he shared with several other men in Athens, Georgia, on February 23.

Shocking video and details from court revealed that Ibarra and the men inside the room were 'laughing' when cops started asking about the young woman's murder.

Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was killed as she went for a run on February 22

She fought her attacker for an excruciating 18 minutes after 'refusing to become his rape victim,' prosecutors allege. Distressing audio was heard earlier in the trial of Riley attempting to call 911 during the struggle.

Ibarra is currently on trial accused of her murder and aggravated assault with intent to rape. He denies the charges and waived his right to a jury, meaning a judge alone will decide his fate.

The video was played in court this week, showing the tight quarters five men called home.

On Monday, one of Ibarra's roommates testified that there were two double beds occupied by two men each, while a fifth man slept on a couch.

Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was killed as she went for a run on February 22

The body worn footage shows officers knocking on the open door of a dark room. A mattress was pushed up against the corner of the room, with a couch against another wall and a laundry rack filled with drying clothes.

Ibarra, wearing a red t-shirt and matching red shorts, climbed out of bed and looked briefly startled by the bright light of the officer's torch.

The video then cut to outside the home, where Ibarra and his housemates waited against a wall.

Police officer Rafael Sayan told the court that Ibarra and his brothers were laughing when officials arrived to ask about the murder.

'There was a lot of laughing, giggling – especially when they were talking about how they were woken up, pulled out of the apartment,' Sayan said.

'I would say the vibe or the atmosphere was very relaxed and calm.'

Ibarra was asked during this interaction about several scratches across his body.

Photographs of his arms, neck and back were displayed in court on Friday afternoon after the court heard that Riley had put up a strong fight against her attacker.

Prosecutors said Ibarra's DNA was a direct match to the DNA under Riley's fingernails, and was '10 billion times more probable than a coincidental match.'

The first scratch officers noted was a four centimeter cut on his lower forearm.

Separately, there was a darker scratch behind his ear at the back of his neck, near his hairline. Another marking was noted down the middle of his back.

'She marked her killer for the entire world to see. It is his DNA. Only his DNA, underneath Laken's right fingernails,' Georgia special prosecutor Sheila Ross said.

'He left behind his thumbprint on her iPhone, which was found near her body at the crime scene.'

Riley's devastated parents have been attending the trial and were overcome with emotion during day one's proceedings.

Ibarra, meanwhile, sat motionless as Ross flashed the last known photograph of 22-year-old Riley across the screen, taken just minutes before her death.

The picture was taken on CCTV cameras near her home on the University of Georgia campus at 9.05am on the day of her death. She was holding her iPhone in her left hand, wearing all black activewear and her noise-canceling AirPods

Ibarra's defense maintain there is not enough evidence to convict him beyond a reasonable doubt.

Attorney for Ibarra Dustin Kirby said: The evidence in this case is very good that Laken Riley was murdered. The evidence that Jose Ibarra killed Laken Riley is circumstantial.

'The evidence that anyone had any intent or certainly committed any sexual assault is speculation.'

The trial continues.
